HAVS explained

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a cover-all term for a range of vibration-related injuries such as:

  • Vibration White Finger (VWF)
  • Whole Body Vibration (WBV)
  • Dupuytren's Contracture

HAVS is well known as work-related limb disorders or limb pain. It is usually caused by using vibrating power tools for multiple hours a day. The constant vibration affects blood vessels, nerves and joints and causes the following symptoms:

  • Tenderness or pain
  • Stiffness
  • Cramp
  • Numbness
  • Throbbing
  • Tingling
  • Weakness
  • White fingers in the cold and deep red when heating up again.

Most common causes and types of HAVS and Vibration white finger

The most common cause for HAVS related injuries is the repetitive use of power tools for multiple hours a day. However, depending on the machinery, using it as little as 15 minutes every day can cause you HAVS.

HSE identifies the use of the following machinery as common causes for HAVS:

  • Concrete breakers, concrete pokers
  • Sanders, grinders, disc cutters
  • Hammer drills
  • Chipping hammers
  • Chainsaws, brush cutters, hedge trimmers
  • Powered mowers
  • Scabblers or needle guns

If you can link your symptoms to one of the activities described above, or to another vibrating machinery task at work, you can claim for compensation from your company’s employer’s liability insurance.

For more information about the symptoms and precautions of HAVS injuries, we recommend the HSE website.

What can I claim for?

If you have HAVS or a related injury, you can claim compensation for the following:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of earnings
  • Hospital visits
  • Physiotherapy
  • Medical expenses

I am experiencing symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Can I claim for compensation?

Carpal Tunnel syndrome can often be linked to your profession. It's important that a medical professional examines you to identify the cause, symptoms and consequences of your injury. If your employer is found negligent, you may be able to claim compensation.

What is my HAVS compensation claim worth?

It completely depends on the extent of the syndrome and the impact it has on your life. If your HAVS was caused due to someone else’s negligence, your claim for pain and suffering could be worth several thousands of pounds.
