Orby is a village in Lincolnshire which has been in existence since before the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086, as it was listed in that as ‘Heresbi.’ By 1115, it had become known as ‘Orreby’ and over time changed its spelling to the modern Orby. The village is surrounded by farmland which is mainly given over to cattle, sheep, cereals and potatoes. There is also woodland in the area around Orby village.

Statistics show that between the year 2012/13, there were 29 fatal accidents, and of those 41% were farmers, 17% were farm workers. Seven fatal accidents occurred on farms happening to members of the general public. The Health and Safety Executive believe that many non-fatal agricultural accidents go unreported.
People who work on farms come into contact with harmful substances (pesticides and so on) and there are dangers to health from working in dusty granaries, chicken farms and so on. Then there are the dangers associated with heavy farm machinery and vehicles. The most common fatal accidents occur when people are:
- Struck by tractors and other farm vehicles;
- Struck by falling objects such as bales, or tree branches;
- Working at a height and have a fall;
- Asphyxiated or drowned;
- Frequently coming into contact with machinery;
- Injured by an animal;
- Trapped and crushed when a vehicle such as a tractor overturns; and
