Ollerton village is in Nottinghamshire, close to Sherwood Forest, famous as being home to Robin Hood. In the past the main industry around the village was agriculture with hops being grown along the banks of the River Maun since about 1691, to stock the weekly hop markets held in the village on Fridays. New Ollerton is just that in comparison with the village as it was built in the 1920s to accommodate colliery workers.
The Romans used to plant hops in their gardens and eat the young shoots as vegetables according to Pliny (61-113 AD). We also ate them in Britain at least until the 20th century; they were boiled, chopped and then covered with cream or butter and served with salt and pepper. Today we tend to associate hops with the brewing of beer, but before beer was produced in Britain, people were brewing ale. In the reign of Henry VII, parliament described the hop as a “wicked weed that would spoil the taste of the drink and endanger the people.” There was a rhyme, ‘hops for beer; herbs for ale.’ In the reign of Elizabeth I tomatoes and potatoes were also looked upon with suspicion. Eventually people began to reconsider their opinions of hops, and of course, they have been used in sleep pillows to cure insomnia and in tisanes in combination with valerian and lemon balm to have a calming effect on people who might be inclined to hysteria.
If you were wandering through a field of hops when they were in flower, you might have felt a little dizzy and perhaps you inadvertently smashed your head on a hop pole, which might have given you a whiplash injury in Ollerton or elsewhere.
