What is whiplash?
Whiplash is a term that refers to the damage done to the neck tendons and muscles in an accident.
Upon impact, as the head is thrown around with force, these muscles hyperflex and hyperextend. This is called whiplash, and can be an incredibly painful injury for those unfortunate enough to sustain it. Aside from causing physical discomfort, whiplash can make life difficult and cause a great deal of inconvenience.
Immediately after a whiplash injury in Caithness, victims will need to keep the neck immobile, which can mean having to take time off work. During the initial phase, the neck, shoulders and upper back may be swollen, resulting in you needing anti-inflammatory medicines and pain medication such as Paracetamol to feel comfortable.
Once the swelling has subsided, a key part of the healing process is keeping the neck active. You may have to see a chiropractor of physiotherapist for some adjustments, and over time, full mobility will return to the affected area. How long this takes depends on the severity of the injury, as mild cases can heal within a few weeks, but more serious cases of whiplash can last for months.
If you’ve had to take time off work, enlist help to care for small children and/or pay for medication during your recovery period, you may find yourself out of pocket. If you sustained whiplash in an accident that was caused by someone else within the past three years, you could be entitled to receive financial compensation. You can claim for not only the physical injury itself, but the costs of the aforementioned inconveniences as well.
