    Head injuries

Head injuries are serious and they may have unpredictable consequences:

    • Sudden bleeding in the skull can cause cranial pressure which results in brain damage if it goes undiagnosed and untreated
    • Blood clots can cause pressure and swelling to increase in the brain tissue and result in damage to areas of the brain
    • Damage to the neck and spinal cord can be caused through violent trauma to the cervical spine, leading to neural damage and even paralysis

    Diagnosing a head injury

Head injuries may require in depth diagnostic treatment to establish the exact location and extent of an injury.  Computerised tomography is routinely used to locate injuries and inform practitioners of the treatment that may be required.  Magnetic resonance imaging is also used to pinpoint the exact position of damage to the body and these images can assist surgeons to locate and remove clots.

The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is used to classify the type and extent of head injury in a casualty.  This scale records a casualty’s response to stimuli, verbal understanding and level of consciousness.

A casualty who is unconscious and unresponsive to stimuli may be very poorly and may record a low Glasgow Coma Scale score, indicating serious head trauma.
