How to have a water birth

There are various ways to have a natural birth that will make you feel more comfortable, and make the experience that much more pleasant for you. One of these ways is to give birth in water, which is a popular option for many first time mums, as it provides a certain level of pain relief and comfort. You can choose to have other pain relief options when you are giving birth in the water as well, so it really can be a more enjoyable option.

    • Know why people choose a water birth. Water births have various positive points for the mother and the baby. Most people believe that this type of birth is less stressful for both the mother and her baby, and can relieve more of the pain of labor.
    • Find a hospital that offers this option. Whilst choosing the hospital that you want to give birth in, look out for one which offers water birth options, and in particular a hospital which has various rooms with water birthing facilities so that you know one will be free for you when you go into labor.
    • Find a midwife who can assist a water birth. You will only be able to have a water birth if you are assisted by a midwife who is trained in water births. Ask the hospital if they have a midwife or midwives trained to do this, and if they would be happy to work with you.
    • Find out about water births at home. You can rent water pools for your home which can allow you to give birth in your home, which can be a much less stressful setting. See what your options are before you make a decision.
