A Brief History Of The Development Of Stourport On Severn

What is now the town of Stourport on Severn actually began life as two hamlets on the course of the River Severn known as Lower Mitton and Upper Mitton. These two hamlets were engulfed and subsumed however by a new port community which developed after the completion of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, in 1772. The newly formed port town came to be known as Stourport on Svern.

The town flourished for a while due to its linkage to England’s canal network, but began to decline when both the Worcester & Birmingham Canal and the newly built railways began to take transit from Stourport’s canal. Since the 1920’s there has been an effort to redevelop and regenerate the town, mostly through the construction of housing developments away from the town centre.
