Seaton Carew is a small seaside resort which can be found within the Borough of Hartlepool, in north east England. For administrative purposes, the coastal settlement is a part of the ceremonial county of County Durham and is situated on the North Sea coast between the town of Hartlepool and the mouth of the River Tees.

It is believed that the town was named after a Norman French family called Carou who owned lands in the area and settled there. This is a theory supported strongly by the fact that the Old English word of Seaton meant ‘settlement or homestead by the sea’. Therefore the whole settlement’s name can be taken as meaning ‘the Carou’s settlement by the sea’.

A brief history of Seaton Carew

There is thought to have been human habitation in the area now known as Seaton Carew since at least the Roman era, but it was during the reign of Henry I that the town came under the ownership of the Carou family and changed its name.

In its early years, much of the economic activity in the settlement came from the fishing industry or from the extraction of salt from sea water but this changed drastically in the 18th and 19th centuries. At this time the then village came popular as a resort with wealthy Quaker families from Darlington. It was this, therefore, which began the growth and transformation of Seaton Carew into the resort that would be recognisable today.

Modern day Seaton Carew is a bit different!

According to the 2001 census, the resort of Seaton Carew had grown to become home to more than 6,000 residents and it is likely that this figure has grown still since then.

What that means is that the town is a relatively busy resort and as such it is likely to be home to a significant number of accidents and injuries. It is for that reason, therefore, that it is important for you to understand the role of injury solicitors in Seaton Carew.
