A panic attack can be very frightening, even if you have had them many times before. With panic attacks your body takes over and gives you symptoms related to your fight or flight response to danger or fear. However, panic attacks usually come at a time when this is inappropriate or unnecessary, and can make you feel very unwell and as though you are not able to carry on with your day. The best way to deal with panic attacks is to speak to a doctor and find out the root cause, but here are some tips on what to do in the meantime.

    • Recognise that your panic attack is a state of mind. Just knowing that everything you are feeling is actually in your head can help you to come to terms with what you are feeling, and take away some of the fear that makes the whole situation that much worse.
    • Take a few deep breaths. When suffering from a panic attack, you are likely to hold your breath or breathe more quickly due to fear, this backs up the way you are feeling and makes it that much worse, so take a moment and breathe deeply, feeling the tension leave your shoulders.
    • Step out of the situation. Whatever it is that has caused your panic attack, step away from it and take five minutes to yourself to understand that you are safe. Trying to force yourself to stay within in situation can only make it worse if you don’t get a break.
    • Talk to someone about it. Confide in your loved ones that you are currently suffering from panic attacks, so that you can let them know when you are suffering from one, or give someone a call and have them talk through the situation with you.
