"If you've been injured through no fault of your own you could be entitled to compensation. If you're unsure if you could claim, I recommend you call Accident Advice Helpline."

Having a seriously ill parent is one of the most stressful things you can deal with. Everyone has to realise at some point that they are going to outlive their parents, and eventually deal with their parents getting old and dying. However, this doesn’t make it any easier to deal with when a parent is seriously ill and in hospital, and it is up to you to hold it together so that they can feel supported whilst they are unwell.

    • Relax between visits. This is a time that when you are not with your ill parent in the hospital you should really be looking after yourself to try to make the process a little easier, and ensure that you don’t make yourself ill. Do things you like and take lots of rest when you are not at the hospital.
    • Eat and sleep regularly. If you don’t take care of your body then your emotions will suffer as well. Although your life is turned upside down by a situation like this, things like eating and sleeping need to remain constant, so regulate these.
    • Talk to your parent. This is a great opportunity for you to spend lots of quality time with your parent and get to know them even better than you already did. Whilst neither of you has something else to do or somewhere else to be, use this time to really connect.
    • Bring someone else along. You might be supporting your parent, but you also need support, so bring along another loved one who can support you on the way there and home, and just be there with you in the hospital.
