Did you know that Wincanton is a small town within the English county of Somerset with a population of around 5300 people? The town has existed from well before the 14th century and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1066, a survey commissioned by William the Conqueror for taxation purposes. However, the town and the area surrounding it has been the site of human activity from at least the Bronze Age. Indeed, there is evidence that the local Windmill Hill was the location of a Bronze Age burial site.

The Wincanton Museum in the town is a Grade II listed building which means that it is protected from being knocked down or altered in any way without particular permission from the local government and planning office. Furthermore, the people who own listed buildings must repair them in a way that is authorised by the planning office and must maintain the building to a high standard. Failure to comply with any of these regulations can lead to prosecution. Only buildings that are culturally, architecturally or historically significant in some way are eligible for protection under the Listed Building Scheme. However the Listed Scheme does not only just apply to buildings. For example, the famous zebra crossing shown on the album cover of The Beatles’ Abbey Road is protected as well as several bridges, statues and memorials. While the Wincanton Museum building is interesting for its own sake, being a cottage dating from the start of the 19th century, the items on display are also worth the visit. There is a lovely Victorian kitchen which is set up according to the period and there is also a room which contains artefacts dating from both the First and Second World Wars.
