The Foods Standards Agency (FSA), in conjunction with local councils, have started a scheme where they check the hygiene standards of anywhere that serves food, and then gives that eatery a hygiene rating standard. They provide a sticker or certificate, which has to be displayed prominently on the doors or windows of the eatery in question.

This is a brilliant idea, as although it is in no way any reflection on the quality or variety of food served, if you know an eatery has got a good hygiene rating, you will know you are fairly safe to eat there and will probably not have to use our Mid Suffolk law firm to make a food poisoning claim.

The ratings of the scheme

Ratings are given from 0 to 5, and as a guide their meanings are as follows:

  • 0 – Urgent improvement necessary
  • 1 – Major improvement necessary
  • 2 – Improvement necessary
  • 3 – Generally satisfactory
  • 4 – Good
  • 5 – Very good

If asked about their rating, the eatery should be prepared to discuss why it was so high or low. They can request a new inspection once they had made the required improvements, and get the rating increased.
