Whilst all accidents are distressing, those which may result in head injuries can cause enormous stress and worry for the family and friends of the casualty.  Indeed, the consequences of a head injury can change the life of the victim and their family for ever.

    Accidents causing head injury

There are many accidents that can cause head and brain injuries, just a few of them are:

    • Slips, trips and falls especially those from height
    • Road traffic accidents
    • Motorcycle accidents
    • Cycling accidents
    • Sporting injuries
    • Pedestrian injuries
    • Construction accidents
    • Industrial accidents
    • Workplace accidents

    How are head injuries assessed?

As soon as the emergency services arrive at the scene of an accident, they assess the severity of a head injury by observation and response.  The paramedics use the Glasgow Coma Scale to assess a casualty’s level of consciousness and response to stimuli.  This scale runs from 3 to 15 and any score of 8 or less indicates a serious head injury has been sustained.

At the hospital, MRI and CT scans can determine which areas of the head have been affected by the trauma and which areas of the brain may be damaged.  Bleeding can cause swelling to the brain and this can put pressure on the brain causing brain damage. It is important to relieve this pressure and reduce the likelihood of permanent brain damage.

What is the prognosis for a serious head injury?

Obviously each situation is unique and so is each victim.  If the brain becomes damaged permanently, then certain areas of the brain may not function normally. This can manifest itself in changes to a person’s personality, emotional response, ability to process language and memory loss, as well as physical problems with balance and walking.
