Mid Devon is a local government district found within the ceremonial county of Devon, in the south west of England. The district is bordered by a number of other similar entities including Exeter, East Devon, North Devon, Teignbridge, West Devon and Torridge, and also shares a border with the county of Somerset.

The district’s major settlement, and its administrative centre, is the town of Tiverton, whilst other notable features within the district include the Rivers Exe, Culm and Creedy and part of the renowned Exmoor National Park.

The Formation Of The District Of Mid Devon

The Mid Devon local government district was officially formed on the 1st April 1974 as a result of the passing of the Local Government Act of 1972. That piece of parliamentary legislation reshaped local government all over the UK creating new districts from former, smaller entities. In the case of Mid Devon the former entities which were merged were the borough of Tiverton and Crediton urban district together with Tiverton Rural District, and Crediton Rural District.

For the first four years of its existence, the new district was known as the Tiverton District but this name was changed by resolution of the council in 1978, in order to appease residents of the district who did not live in Tiverton itself.

    Modern Mid Devon

The current dimensions of the Mid Devon local government district see it cover a total land area of 223 square miles, much of which is rural or undeveloped in nature. According to data from a 2011 estimate, the district is home to approximately 77,900 permanent residents, giving it a population density of 350 per square mile.

The aforementioned population density is comparatively low and this suggests that accidents are likely to be few and far between in the district. Whilst this is likely true, it does not mean that we shouldn’t take some time to consider Mid Devon compensation claims.
