Accident Advice Helpline’s guide to claiming compensation
Here is our three-step guide to claiming successful and stress-free compensation.
Step 1 – Understand if you have a claim and how much it could be worth
The first guide to claiming your compensation is understanding whether or not you have a compensation claim. As a general rule, if you have been injured in an accident in the last three years and it wasn’t your fault, you could have a claim. A case for compensation arises when someone else caused you injury because of their actions, negligence or their failure to act.
For example, a car driving carelessly that causes you to have a car accident and injury gives you an entitlement to compensation. A local authority that fails to replace a broken manhole cover which causes you to trip and suffer an injury, is liable to pay you compensation.
You can find out whether or not you have a valid claim by taking the unique 30-second online test at Accident Advice Helpline’s website.
Step 2 – Understand what help is available to you and how much help you want
There are many ways for you to make your compensation claim. You could research the specific aspects of your case yourself, or source a specialist solicitor to help you. Alternatively, you could simply head for your nearest high street solicitor and see what they can offer you.
Maybe you will browse the internet and look for a law firm that seems to meet your needs. This guide to claiming suggests that you don’t try to do everything yourself. You only get one chance at claiming your compensation and personal injury law is a specialist area. It is definitely best to ask the experts.
But choosing which experts to ask is up to you. We suggest that you look for the following qualities as a minimum:
- A 100% no-win, no-fee* guarantee: Any law firm worth their salt should be confident of getting a good result. They should therefore be willing to take the risk themselves, by offering you a no-win, no-fee* guarantee. That means that if you don’t win your case, you don’t pay them a penny.
- No up-front fees: The same goes for up-front fees. A good firm should not feel the need to hedge their bets by charging you an up-front fee. All this does is put you at financial risk, so don’t be tempted to hand any money over up-front, no matter how good a result they promise.
- Good track record: Choose a firm that has a good reputation. For example, Accident Advice Helpline have been around since the year 2000 and our patron is consumer champion Dame Esther Rantzen. Look for solid credentials in the firm you choose.
Step 3 – Sit back and let the experts do their job
If you have chosen well, you should have all the support you need at your fingertips. It should be time for you to relax and let your chosen law firm take the stress and strain for you. Use the time to recover from your accident and anticipate your compensation award.
