Gosport is a borough town found within the county of Hampshire and on the southern coast of England. The town is situated on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour opposite the City of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by a pedestrian ferry. This makes the town a contiguous part of the so-called South Hampshire Conurbation, which is one of the most populous urban areas in the UK.
In the past
For much of its existence the settlement of Gosport has been considered to be a military town which is largely involved in the support, defence and supply of the Royal Naval base at nearby Portsmouth. This naval and marine element of the settlement’s operation explains the ‘port’ suffix of the name but the origin of the prefix of ‘Gos’ is highly debated.
Two popular schools of thought are that the town’s name is in some way linked to either geese or gorse vegetation but there is a third opinion which seems more plausible. This is that the name comes from a derivation of the phrase ‘God’s Port’. This theory seems to hold some weight when you consider that the phrase ‘God’s port our haven’ forms a part of the town’s motto.
Modern day Gosport
The town of Gosport has all but lost its original purpose of serving the Royal Naval base in Portsmouth in the last two decades due to the decline of the base itself. This has made it imperative for the town to find new sources of income and one such avenue which they have explored is that of tourism. Many of the installations and facilities which were associated with naval activity, in fact, have been adapted to become visitor attractions and tourist destinations.
This adoption of tourism by Gosport has helped to keep the town of around 83,000 residents a busy and active one. This is largely good for the local area but does also mean that accidents and injuries can be comparatively common in the town. Sometimes people get hurt through no fault of their own.Open Claim Calculator
