    When food poisoning could occur


    Food poisoning is an illness that is brought about by consuming food which has been contaminated with various bacteria, such as salmonella and E.coli. Luckily, it is not usually serious, and most people suffering from food poisoning will get better within days. However, in some extreme cases, it can be much more serious indeed, which is why treatment should always be sought when suffering from the illness.

    When food poisoning could occur

    There are a number of scenarios when food poisoning could occur, simply because food can be contaminated with bacteria at any point during production, processing or cooking. Here are just some of the things that can cause food poisoning to occur:

    • Improper cooking
      One of the times when food poisoning could occur is when food has not been cooked properly. This is especially the case when cooking meat, which much be cooked at a certain temperature to ensure that any nasty bacteria residing within the food is killed off.If you are ever in doubt about the correct cooking temperature of a certain food, it is always a good idea to check either the packaging or a reputable online source to ensure you cook food safely.
    • Incorrect food storage
      Many foods need to be stored at temperatures below 5C in order to stop bacteria growing and multiplying. You should never eat these foods if they have been left at temperatures in excess of 5C because there is a very high chance of contamination.
    • Leaving cooked food out
      If cooked food is left out of the fridge for a long time, there is a significant chance that it will become contaminated and that it will make you ill should you consume it.
    • Food contamination by sick people
      Individuals who are ill with symptoms like diarrhoea and vomiting should be kept away from food, which is why people working in the food industry cannot go to work when suffering these symptoms.
    • Cross-contamination
      Cross-contamination is a major cause of food poisoning. It occurs when bacteria is spread between food, food preparation surfaces and equipment. In order to avoid this, raw meat should be kept away from other foods and surfaces and equipment should be thoroughly cleaned before being used with uncooked food.

    Of course, these sources of food poisoning can only be avoided if you are cooking in your own home. When you are eating out, or purchasing food from the supermarket, you have no control over its storage and preparation, which is why, if you become ill with food poisoning through no fault of your own, you may be able to obtain personal injury compensation.
