Whiplash and an injury lawyer on the Isle of Islay

There are many ways in which whiplash can happen. Just some of them are:

  • A rear-end shunt with another vehicle;
  • Playing contact sports such as rugby or boxing;
  • Slipping, tripping or falling and banging your head; and
  • Some heavy or solid object hitting your head.

The effects of whiplash

It is not unusual for the symptoms of whiplash to not start for a little while after the accident, sometimes the next day. When your head is suddenly jolted, it can damage the nerves and tendons in the neck, causing whiplash. Symptoms can include:

  • Headaches;
  • Backache;
  • Pain in the neck area;
  • Stiffness and lack of movement in the neck;
  • Pins and needles in the arms and legs;
  • Nausea;
  • Tiredness;
  • Muscle spasms;
  • Blurred vision;
  • Dizziness; and
  • Depression.

The treatment for whiplash

Plenty of rest and gentle exercise will be the first thing medical practitioners prescribe. Most cases of whiplash will need no further treatment and you will recover in a few weeks.  Painkillers and ice packs can help to reduce the pain and swelling, but always remember never to put the ice directly onto your skin. The more severe cases of whiplash can take a long time to get better and some people never totally recover. In these cases, neck braces and physiotherapy may be used to help relieve the symptoms.
