    How to Prevent Repetitive Strain Injury

    Repetitive strain injury is a workplace risk in any occupation and causes aches and pains to the muscles which can sometimes make the simplest of tasks seem like a huge effort. It happens when the same action is performed repetitively and can be anything from typing to digging holes. It is the responsibility of your employer to ensure you don’t suffer from repetitive strain injury and if this is not the case and you end up in pain, you may be entitled to make a compensation claim. There are some measures you can take on your own to minimise your chances of suffering from RSI.

    Rest Periods

    It is important to ensure you take breaks between your work, so you can give yourself a chance to rest and relax. If your job involves typing for instance, a five minute break will do wonders for ensuring your muscles don’t become cramped and cause you pain. You may even want to incorporate some stretching of the muscles during your rest periods as this can further reduce the likelihood of developing repetitive strain injuries.

    Reduce Deadlines

    If you constantly work to tight deadlines, this can put a lot of pressure on your muscles. If you feel that these are becoming too much, speak to your manager in the first instance as they may be able to reduce deadlines. If your manager fails to do anything and you develop repetitive strain injury as a result, you may be able to make a compensation claim .


    You should always have the correct protection to reduce risks of suffering from this illness. It may include gloves or your workstation may need to be adapted to put less pressure on your muscles. Your employer should do regular risk assessments to try and reduce the likelihood of this occurring, but if they don’t and you end up developing this illness, you may be eligible to make a compensation claim.
