What are pressure sores?
Pressure sores, also commonly referred to as pressure ulcers or even bedsores, often start off as simply red patches of skin on various parts of the body of patients who are bed ridden. They often develop on the heels, ankles, along the spine, across the buttocks and along the shoulders.
Over time and if pressure continues (from lying in one position) then the red patches can start to change in colour and often become purple. The skin will then begin to deteriorate and crater like holes can appear in the skin. These open wounds, or sores, are prime areas for infection.
Why can you make a claim?
If you develop pressure sores then you may be able to make a Caerphilly ‘no win, no fee*’ compensation claim against the people who have provided you with medical care. This is because in the vast majority of cases pressure sores can easily be avoided.
As pressure sores often develop in individuals who are bedridden, or spend a large portion of their time in wheelchairs, such patients should already be highlighted as being at risk of these complications. As a result, medical staff or other professionals charged with their care, should take the necessary steps to ensure that the risks are reduced.
This can include ensuring that bedridden patients are turned regularly, which can reduce the sores from appearing as different areas of the body are presented to mattresses, and therefore pressure in one area is reduced.
Equally, it is possible to ensure that bedridden patients are provided with specialised mattresses which help limit the extent of the pressure that is placed on their body and their skin.
If establishments such as hospitals, nursing homes or residential care facilities fail in this regard and sores are developed, then a Caerphilly ‘no win, no fee*’ compensation claim could be made.
