If you have been an innocent victim of a crime and have been either physically or mentally injured, then you may be eligible to make a personal injury compensation claim from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
Am I eligible to make a claim?
You may be eligible to make a claim if:
- you have been seriously injured and would expect to receive at least £1,000, as this is CICA’s minimum award for personal injury.(£1,000).
- you were injured in a crime which occurred in England, Scotland or Wales. The person who inflicted the injury upon you does not have to have been convicted of the crime against you, and nor does he or she have to have been charged with the crime.
- you apply for compensation within two years of the crime in which you were injured. However it is possible, in exceptional circumstances, that your application will be considered even if it is outside this limit (for example you were so badly injured that you couldn’t have applied earlier).
You may not be eligible if the incident in which you were injured was not reported to the police.

Accident Advice Helpline
Accident Advice Helpline has a website which we encourage you to visit for a number of reasons. To begin with, we want you to know who we are and that we have as our patron Esther Rantzen. She has long been a champion or consumer rights, you may recall. We have been in the business of personal injury compensation for over ten years and our team of expert solicitors may be able to help and advise you.
We would like you to spare thirty seconds to take the thirty second test. This calculates the amount of compensation you could be awarded for your injury. Of course, this is just an estimate as each incident and injury is different so no one can accurately calculate the sum you might be awarded.
If, after taking the test, you would like to call us for free expert advice, please do. We have two freephone numbers, 0333 500 0993 from your mobile, or 0800 689 0500 from a landline. Our lines are always open for your calls, so you can ring us at any time of day or night, any day of the year. Why not call us now and find out if we can help you?
