How to settle back into work after a long time away

If you have been off work for a long time, perhaps because of an injury or illness, it can be difficult to head back to the office after this time. If you are still feeling the after-effects of your injury or illness, then you may not be able to work as well as you could prior to your leaving, and it is likely that a few things will have happened and changed since you went away.

However, it is easy to settle back in quickly as long as you put your mind to it and remain focused, as well as being accepting of your limitations so that you don’t end up becoming frustrated with the situation.

    • Have a return to work interview. Arrange a meeting for a couple of days before you return to work officially so that you can sit down with your employer and discuss any changes you might need to know about, as well as anything that you are concerned about. Finally, this can help to reassure you before you come in for your first day back.
    • Get trained. Don’t be ashamed to ask for a quick retrain before you settle back into work permanently. Your employer should be prepared to give you a day or two to relearn anything you may have forgotten, as well as any new processes that may have occurred during your time away.
    • Take your time. Don’t try to rush back into your job, feeling as though you need to prove something. It is natural for it to take time for you to get back to normal when you first come back after a long break, so take your time and get your bearings before you start trying to reach the targets that you did before you were away.
