While most wasp stings are recovered from quickly, in a minority of cases they can have more dramatic and long-lasting consequences. This is when you might require wasp sting accident counselling.
While Accident Advice Helpline cannot provide counselling or refer you to a counsellor, we can take into account the cost and inconvenience of counselling when putting together a compensation claim package. This means you may be able to recover any costs incurred from counselling. We will also take into account loss of earnings due to time taken off work, whether from the wasp sting accident itself or from the need for counselling. It is important that you keep a record of the time you take off from work and any expenses incurred as a result of the wasp sting accident. This will all count as evidence in your case.
Why might you need counselling?
If you are allergic to wasp stings, then being stung can be an extremely traumatic experience, even if you make a full physical recovery. An allergic reaction can cause your body to go into anaphylactic shock, with symptoms including stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fainting, sudden swelling and difficulty breathing. Your doctor may decide that counselling is essential to your recovery, even if you do not realise it yourself. Being attacked by a swarm of wasps can also be a traumatic experience, whether you are allergic or not.
Phobias and anxiety caused by a wasp sting accident can be as debilitating as a physical injury, and can affect not just you but your family, friends and colleagues. If your doctor refers you for counselling, it is because he believes that the mental after-effects of the wasp sting accident could negatively impact upon your personal life or your ability to perform in your job.
How to get counselling
Psychiatric counselling should be available for free on the NHS. However it is possible that the type of counselling that you require is not available in your area or that there are long waiting lists. If your doctor has referred you, it is important that you get counselling as soon as possible. Therefore you may wish to consider paying for private counselling.
Accident Advice Helpline may be able to help you with the costs of your wasp sting accident counselling. However, it is important to note that you cannot claim compensation just for being stung by a wasp. You can only make a claim if you can prove that the wasp sting accident was the fault of a third party. For instance, it is the responsibility of hotels, parks and other public places to remove wasps’ nests on their premises, or take adequate measures to protect their customers.
If you feel that you were put at undue risk in a public place, then you may have a case for compensation. If you feel that you may have a claim, call our free 24-hour helpline to speak to our team of friendly advisors.
