Treating an ankle injury

However, you may wish to see a doctor if the pain persists beyond this point. If you have a severe sprain, your ankle may have started to swell, and you could be finding it hard to stand up.

If you don’t treat a sprain correctly, you could be facing long-term problems. It can be hard to differentiate between a fracture and a sprain without undergoing an x-ray. Your doctor will want to know what you were doing when you sustained your injury and may suspect broken bones. If you have sustained a sprain without breaking any bones, you won’t normally need surgery.

There are three gradings used to classify sprains: grade I, II and III. If you have a grade I sprain, you’re advised to limit weight bearing and may need to use crutches. Ankle braces may be used to control swelling, and ice should help reduce swelling. Compressing will also help you control it. Elevating the foot can also speed up the recovery process. Grade II sprains usually need more time and you may need to have the ankle splinted. Grade III sprains are the most serious and you could require surgery or a cast. If you have sprained your ankle on multiple occasions you may need to have an operation to tighten your ligaments.


Phases of recovery

There are three phases you need to undergo to recover from a sprain. In phase I you’ll need to rest, protect and reduce swelling, whilst in phase II you’ll be restoring the flexibility of your ankle as well as its strength and range of motion. During phase III you gradually return to normal activity. You may face further problems down the line if you don’t complete the rehabilitation process properly.
