Spotting the signs of a broken arm

So, you think you’ve broken your arm? Stop right there. Some of the outward signs of a broken arm can appear very similar to the signs of a sprain, which is why it’s important to have a proper medical diagnosis if you think you have broken your arm in an accident. Broken arms need immediate medical attention and can take from six to 10 weeks to heal, longer if you have suffered a serious fracture and need surgery to realign your bones. Spotting the signs of a broken arm early means you’ll get the medical treatment you need and can get on the road to recovery faster.

What are the signs of a broken arm?

Because the outward signs of a broken arm are similar to a sprain, it’s important to see a medical professional as soon as possible after your accident. You may notice swelling and bruising on your arm, and it will usually be very painful to move and tender to touch. Difficulty moving your arm, hand and wrist may be experienced and in cases where the fracture is complex then the bone may poke through the skin and there may be bleeding. It’s not abnormal to feel dizzy, sick or faint after your accident, as your body is in shock. If you think somebody has broken their arm you should get them to A&E as soon as you can or call an ambulance.

The faster they receive treatment, the faster their recovery. If somebody else’s negligence caused their accident then claiming personal injury compensation may be possible, and they will need a medical report in order to make a 100% no-win, no-fee* claim with Accident Advice Helpline.
