How to prevent salmonella on holiday

How to prevent salmonella on holiday

Salmonella is a food-borne bacterial infection which is spread by ingestion of undercooked food. The food poisoning that results can produce symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps but usually goes away without treatment. However, it can cause a sufferer discomfort, particularly when contracted abroad.

Recent outbreaks of salmonella have occurred in Menorca, Majorca and Egypt where poor standards of hygiene have resulted in its spread. The reasons behind this have included ingesting dirty water from pools, eating undercooked food and food left out in hot weather on buffets.

Prevention is the best way to avoid contracting salmonella on holiday. If you suspect that hygiene standards are low at your hotel then avoid eating buffet food and instead ask for something fresh to be prepared. Also, check whether your pool is properly sanitised and notify someone from your holiday company to ensure that it is adequately cleaned. If there are food seating areas outside, check for high animal or insect activity. Droppings can spread salmonella therefore avoid eating outside if animals and insects appear to be prevalent. You should always notify your holiday rep if you become ill to ensure that the illness does not spread. If you become ill and someone else may be at fault, you may be entitled to compensation.

Compensation claims for holiday illness or injury

You may become ill because your hotel failed to put in proper food hygiene practices or you may have taken a dip in an unsanitary pool. In addition, your illness may have been caused by a visit to the local water park or to another pre-organised destination where food was served. Your compensation claim will go much smoother if you booked your holiday with a UK-based company and someone else was at fault for your illness. If you became ill or were injured during any stage of a package holiday, Accident Advice Helpline can assist you in making a claim to the holiday company directly.
