Richard MacDonald CBE has just been named Chair of the Joint Working Group, an industry and government body looking at ways of reducing campylobacter in chicken. With 280,000 estimated total cases of food poisoning a year, of which only 70,000 are reported to GP’s, campylobacter is a serious concern.
The collaborative effort between the National Farmers Union, British Retail Consortium, Food Standards Agency, British Poultry Council and Defra, has outlined plans which will look at reducing campylobacter throughout the entire poultry supply chain.
Richard MacDonald had this to say about his appointment, “I’m pleased to have been asked to deliver meaningful progress in reducing campylobacter. I look forward to working with industry and government in this fight against a naturally occurring bug that is a very complex and persistent opponent.”
Mr MacDonald steps into the shoes of the former CEO of the British Poultry Council, Peter Bradnock, who guided the first phase of development for the Joint Working Group. This new second phase will introduce new technology and interventions to the production and farming chain, including addressing new retail packaging to reduce campylobacter.
