Puncture wounds can be caused by stepping on a nail or glass, being punctured by a needle or they can be caused by an animal bite. Depending on the object, there may be a risk of infection, particularly if the object is dirty or is a needle which has already been used or thrown away. When treating puncture wounds, begin by trying to slow or stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the wound. If the wound appears to be infected or it is especially deep, seek medical advice as soon as possible. Clean the wound with water and remove any debris in the puncture with tweezers cleaned with alcohol to prevent spreading infection. If bleeding persists and there is embedded debris that cannot be removed, seek medical attention. After the wound has been cleaned, apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream if you have some available. If not, gently clean around the wound with soap and water. Apply a clean bandage or dressing to keep out bacteria. If there are any signs of infection, seek the advice of your doctor. In addition, if the wound is deep, in the foot or is the result of something potentially contaminated, seek medical advice. This also applies for animal bites that break the skin.
Puncture wound accidents
Treating puncture wounds is often straightforward and rarely causes serious complications if first aid is applied and medical attention is sought. Accidents can happen anywhere and are often just that: accidents. However, puncture wounds from nails or foreign objects lying around can be the result of carelessness on someone else’s part, particularly in the workplace. In addition, puncture wounds can be caused if construction sites are not cleaned up properly or even in playgrounds and parks if they are not adequately cleaned and maintained. This could result in an injury to you or your child, but there could be someone else at fault. Where there is evidence of this, Accident Advice Helpline can assist you.
