Safer driving campaign The Honest Truth is now set to be launched in various countries across Europe, after Romanian police agreed to be one of the first to use it on their roads. The Honest Truth is a partnership between Devon and Cornwall police as well as professional driving instructors, local authorities and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. The campaign was formed in 2010 when a fatal accident near Aveton Gifford took the lives of three young people devastating the local community. Devon and Cornwall police Sergeant Olly Tayler and station officer Rob Carlson from Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were invited by Romanian traffic police to give a talk to residents of the Calarasi district in Romania about the campaign and Romanian police have now agreed to use the campaign to help keep roads safer.
Sergeant Tayler has stated that Romanian police are keen to explore the benefits of the campaign and hope to take it nationally. Issues such as driving under the influence and peer pressure are not unique among young people in the UK according to station officer Rob Carlson and it is hoped that the campaign will encourage a safer attitude to driving among people across Romania and Europe. Interest in the campaign has been shown from 12 European countries and 10 road safety partnerships across the UK.
Importance of road safety
Safer driving campaigns can educate young people on the repercussions of dangerous driving and making poor decisions on the road. Many fatalities are caused because of poor decision making and many young people succumb to peer pressure when using the roads. Simply encouraging the use of a seatbelt can prevent serious injury and putting away distractions like mobile phones can reduce the risk of an accident occurring which could lead to a fatality. Although many people choose to drive safely, there are others who do not recognise the importance of safer driving. If you have been involved in a road traffic accident that was someone else’s fault, you can claim compensation for your injuries.
