If you eat something that upsets your stomach, perhaps because it was contaminated, past its use-by date or had not been kept under the proper conditions, you could end up with food poisoning.
When this occurs you may well be unable to leave home for a few days, mainly because of sickness and diarrhoea. You will also feel exceptionally weak and it will take a while to get your appetite and strength back.
If you are violently sick from food poisoning you are likely to pull your stomach muscles and feel very uncomfortable for some time. On some occasions you may not be able to keep any water down, even though you should still try to drink it in small sips on a regular basis. This will help prevent dehydration, which can potentially be a very serious condition.
What caused you to be violently sick from food poisoning?
This will probably be a question that will occur to you very early on. Sometimes you may just have been unlucky and risked eating something out of the fridge that turned out not to be so nice after all. However in some isolated instances people end up getting food poisoning from a restaurant, a takeaway or a buffet provided by a company, perhaps at a work do for example.
This is the type of situation where negligence can be the cause of the food poisoning. On some occasions several people may fall sick and be unable to do anything for a few days. If you can narrow down where you think you may have picked up the food poisoning, food safety officers can inspect those premises to determine whether they were responsible. Gathering evidence can help lead a prosecution against the business if it was responsible for making people ill.
How fast is the recovery?
It may take a few days to start feeling better, but once you get your appetite back you will usually feel much better a lot faster. Your body will need to replace the fuel it lost during the sickness, so it is worth doing this while eating plain foods.
However the memory of what happened could remain with you. Accident Advice Helpline can work out whether compensation might be payable.
