Falling violently ill on holiday can completely ruin your time away, causing you to have to spend most of your time indoors, potentially in bed and in severe cases in hospital. Even just two or three days of illness can take away the best part of your holiday, especially if you have only gone away for a week. Not only can becoming violently ill ruin your holiday, but it can also cause great concern, especially if you end up being hospitalised in a foreign country where you do not even speak the language and cannot understand what is wrong with you or the proposed treatment to cure you.
Unfortunately, we see many cases such as this but with over 15 years’ experience in the industry we are very familiar with the best ways of going about claiming compensation from the negligent party. Though we appreciate this will not make the terrible experience simply go away, we also know how satisfying it is that someone is held accountable for ruining your holiday by making you ill.
Causes of holiday illnesses
There are many things that can cause you to become violently ill on holiday, some of these are self-inflicted, such as drinking too much, not getting vaccinated or getting too much sun and it is very unlikely you would be able to claim compensation for these. Here are some causes of holiday illnesses that you may be able to claim compensation for:
- Food poisoning caused by the hotel or any other restaurants included in the holiday package; this can be from cross-contamination, food being served undercooked or food being stored at the incorrect temperature
- Illness caused by health and safety failings at the hotel, such as swimming pools not being cleaned or sterilised regularly.
Prevention of holiday illnesses
There are some illnesses you can prevent yourself simply by getting vaccinated and taking proper care of yourself while on holiday, and making sure you keep yourself hydrated. There are, however, some illnesses that only the hotel can prevent. In order to do this they should always make sure that proper food hygiene and health and safety protocols are followed in the hotel kitchen and everywhere else in the hotel grounds. This is the responsibility of the hotel, and the hotel alone.
