A woman whose holiday to the Dominican Republic was ruined after contracting salmonella there has finally been awarded a five-figure sum in compensation for what happened. Tracy Middleton stayed at the Casa Marina Reef Resort in late-2011 but although the resort was thought of as a luxurious one this was far from the case.
There was evidence of negligence with regard to the conditions surrounding the food that was served at the resort. Dirty cutlery, reheated food, uncovered food and many other issues were seen to exist during the time they were there.
When she and her husband returned home Tracy ended up being severely dehydrated as a result of the illness. This led to her being admitted to hospital for a total of four days. Even now, three years later, she is still suffering from the after-effects of the illness. These include stomach cramps and she also has to refrain from eating certain foods that can make it worse. After the settlement was agreed she said she was glad to put the whole experience behind her so she could look forward.
How bad could these illnesses be?
In some cases people who have experienced severe sickness and diarrhoea need to be admitted to hospital in order to be treated intensively for their symptoms. The severity of the symptoms depends on how bad the infection or illness is, but in some cases people can be affected for a long time afterwards. At the least it can ruin what would otherwise have been a lovely holiday, as it did in this case. Salmonella can be fatal, as can other forms of food poisoning in some people. However many cases are entirely preventable if the right measures are taken with food safety.
