    Compensation for lift safety failings

When using lifts and escalators, how often do you stop to think about whether they’re safe. Probably not very often. Yet if lifts are not maintained properly, they can be dangerous, and lift safety failings could easily lead to an accident occurring that could leave you seriously injured. There is some good news though – if lift safety failings have caused your accident, you could make a claim for personal injury compensation.

Lift owners are legally responsible for ensuring that lifts in public places, such as shopping centres, schools, flat blocks, hotels and places of work, are maintained to a safe standard. This includes having lifts regularly inspected by trained, qualified professionals, and obtaining documents as evidence of these inspections. If a fault is detected, the lift inspector is legally obliged to inform the owner, who must then take action to close the lift to the public whilst it is being fixed. If they fail to meet any of these obligations and somebody is injured as a result of lift safety failings, they could be held liable.

If you have been injured in a lift, you may wish to consider contacting a personal injury lawyer to find out whether you could make a claim for compensation.

    Physical and psychological injuries

Being involved in a lift accident could leave you psychologically injured, as well as physically. The following symptoms are not uncommon for those who have been injured in a lift accident:

    • Panic attacks
    • Shortness of breath
    • Phobia (fear) of using a lift again
    • Nightmares and trouble sleeping
    • Anxiety

These psychological symptoms could impact your quality of life and may make it hard to do things you used to take for granted, like go out alone. They may even make it hard for you to return to work, so you could be affected by loss of earnings.
