Anyone who has ever fallen down a flight of stairs will tell you how frightening and painful it can be. You may only slip down a step or two, or even trip up them, but falling down a flight can result in some serious injuries. The same applies to anyone falling down hotel stairs.
Thankfully occasions such as these are rare, but they can happen if the condition of the stairs or the carpet on them is not as good as it should be. It is easy to get a shoe caught in a worn or torn carpet and if this occurs on a flight of stairs it could potentially be very uncomfortable or dangerous. Injuries such as twisted or broken ankles or hands are possible, and even a broken coccyx (tailbone) if you land on this part of your anatomy.
Why might this happen?
We have already mentioned the prospect of a well-worn carpet leading someone to fall down the stairs. However, obstructions and potential hazards might also cause the same thing to happen. For example if a worker was to leave something sitting on the top step, perhaps a vacuum cleaner for example, a guest may not see it and end up falling down hotel stairs as a result. The further someone falls the more likely it is they might injure themselves, even when falling on a relatively soft carpet.
Accident Advice Helpline has handled cases where similar accidents have occurred. In some instances people are hurt because they have been injured through no fault of their own, but instead through the actions (or lack of actions) of another person. In these cases there could indeed be negligence involved.
How serious are injuries caused
in this way?
Some people may be lucky to get away with bruises. However, in other cases there is the potential for more serious injuries to happen. Either way, if someone else was responsible there might be a chance to claim compensation.
