Ryder Cup captain and former world no.2 golfer Colin Montgomerie has told journalists that he is ‘lucky to come out relatively unscathed’ after a frightening car accident yesterday.
The Scot, 47, was driving his silver BMW 7-series along the A80, near Cumbernauld, in North Lanarkshire, when he was struck and spun round by a delivery van, the driver of which has been arrested on road traffic offences.
The driver’s side of the BMW was extensively damaged in the accident and the curtain airbags along the windows were triggered.
Montgomerie told the Scotsman, “I was trapped as the side of the car was compressed and the air bags were holding me back but the passenger door suddenly opened and I was pulled to safety thanks to drivers who witnessed the accident.
“It was a terrible shock and I am lucky to have come out of it relatively unscathed, thanks I am sure to the car I was driving.”
A section of the A80 was closed following the accident, leading to queues of up to four miles in either direction.
