Claiming for criminal injuries

How do criminal injuries occur?

Criminal injuries tend to occur when someone is injured because a crime or unlawful act has been committed. If someone attempts to burgle your property, for example, and you’re hurt as a result, this could be classed as a criminal injury.

Of course, you could suffer criminal injuries if you’re merely at the scene of a crime. If someone rushes past you after stealing from a shop, for example, you could suffer criminal injuries if they knock you to the floor or harm you in some way.

Are you claiming for criminal injuries?

A lot of people don’t realise that you can take legal action if you’ve been hurt as a result of a crime. Although you may assist with a police investigation, you could also launch legal action of your own and start claiming for criminal injuries.

When making a personal injury claim, you’ll need to prove that you weren’t responsible for your injuries but you’ll also need to show that you received medical help. Although you don’t have to have suffered serious injuries in order to be able to make a claim, you will need to have received some form of treatment.

If you were operated on, given physiotherapy or even a course of pain relief, this could be enough to enable you to proceed with your claim. Fortunately, all the details of your treatment will be on your medical records and these can be used when you take legal action.
