Chinese couple survive their car being crushed by a lorry’s shipping container

By David Brown on July 25, 2014

A Chinese couple have miraculously survived their car being crushed flat by a lorry’s shipping container load.

The lorry driver said that the load came off his vehicle after he swerved to avoid a vehicle ahead which had slammed on its breaks. The driver stated that he turned too sharply to the right which tipped the vehicle over and threw the shipping container off his load; this lead to an unfortunate car being crushed which was driving alongside it.

Fire-fighters arrived at the scene in Quingdao in eastern China’s Shandong province and were convinced that nobody had survived this accident. They were amazed to hear a woman’s voice from under the container.

After a 100 tonne crane pulled the shipping container away, a woman gave a thumbs up through the tiny gap in the window indicating that both her and her male friend were both surprisingly alive. They then set about the task of getting the pair out.

The car was unrecognisable and was left with only 60cm of space inside so it’s a wonder they survived.

Fire brigade spokesman Chi Tang said “We didn’t expect anybody to be alive but then we heard a woman’s voice and realised that actually somebody had survived”. Incredibly the woman was easily pulled from the wreckage with little more than a few cuts and bruises whilst the man travelling with her was in a more serious condition. He needed to be cut free from the crushed vehicle but is expected to make a full recovery.

Sadly fatal road accidents are a serious problem in China where the number of new drivers and the highway network are expanding while traffic laws and safety is regularly flouted. The Chinese ministry of transport says the number of road deaths sits at 60,000 in 2012 and about 200 fatalities a day!

Making a claim if you’ve been in a road traffic accident

Not all road traffic accidents are as are dramatic as this one but if you’ve been involved in an accident you could claim for compensation.
