Car Safety Guide – What are Speed Alert Systems (ISA)?

A huge proportion of accidents are caused by speeding, with the added issue that those accidents that do happen for this reason are made far worse because of the force of the impact. This is not necessarily because a driver is deliberately speeding but because they have lost concentration and have let their speed creep up without noticing it. Speed Alert Systems – also called Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems – help drivers to keep their speeds within the recommended limits. They vary in the way they work – some use software which analyses images from a camera and recognises traffic signs. Others use satellite systems, but this needs the in-car system to be kept strictly up to date. Sometimes the system uses an audible alert or lights but they can be switched off – these systems are very much at the driver’s discretion as to whether they help or not because they are only warnings – they don’t actually change the driving technique of the driver or adjust the car in any way at all. Speed is a killer, there is no doubt about that and Speed Alert Systems, used correctly, can make any journey safer.

    Speed kills!

Speed causes accidents and also makes them worse, so anyone exceeding the speed limit is really behaving very inconsiderately indeed. Sometimes it is hard to stay under the limit as the drivers around you can be very aggressive if you go at a speed they consider slow – don’t let yourself be bullied and remember that tailgating is now an offence which carries a hefty fine. If you are hurt in an accident because someone is speeding recklessly, you will have a very good claim to compensation – just bear in mind that you need to seek medical attention even if you appear unhurt because whiplash can take a while to develop.
