"If you've been injured through no fault of your own you could be entitled to compensation. If you're unsure if you could claim, I recommend you call Accident Advice Helpline."

Can I make a car accident claim without a police report?

Some car accidents are dealt with by the drivers involved. A minor accident in which any injuries sustained are not serious can be handled in this way. More serious accidents may well involve the police being called. In some instances, even a minor accident might result in the police being called if someone on the scene makes that call. However, if this didn’t happen in your situation, you may be wondering whether you could make a car accident claim without a police report.

The good news is you can make such a claim. A personal injury claim is made according to the situation that occurred and who was to blame. In some cases, another driver might admit fault. In other cases, this doesn’t happen, but the weight of proof might tip the odds in favour of the innocent party. Either way, a police report is not a requirement.

What happens if you have no report?

When you complete the claim form, you will find a section where you are asked if you have a police report number. If you do, you can obviously fill this in. If not, you can simply leave it blank or indicate you do not have one.

When a claim of this sort is made, proof of what occurred can come from several sources. A police report could be just one of them. You might also be able to get details of any witnesses that saw what happened, as their statements can help prove you were not the cause of the crash, and someone else was potentially negligent. Taking down details of the scene and taking pictures on your mobile are both good ideas too.
