Over £28 million in clinical negligence compensation has been paid out by Betsi Cadwaladr University health board over the last three years new figures have found. The health board paid out £12,624,152 between 2011 and 2012 and paid out over £6 million between 2012 and 2013. Finally, it paid out a total of £9,593,651 between 2013 and 2014. However, the board has stated that the increase in payments mirrors national trends but continues to work on learning from the claims made previously.
Claimants can file a suit for compensation if a medical professional is found to be negligent while carrying out their duties. Grandmother Brenda Gorst is one such claimant who successfully won a £250,000 payout when her foot surgery was botched. Her foot was left pointing 90 degrees in the wrong direction following the surgery which resulted in several follow up procedures. Mrs Gorst went through her ordeal for seven years as a result of the original mistake. Although botched surgery and medical negligence is rare when compared to the number of successful cases, it is still possible for a patient to be injured or ill because of poor treatment.
What you can do
Doctors, nurses, dentists and surgeons all have a duty of care to their patients which means they are responsible for treating them correctly and diagnosing them correctly. Surgeons are responsible for keeping equipment maintained, following correct protocols during a procedure and being physically and mentally fit enough to carry out surgery. If you have suffered an infection due to improper care or you have been excessively scarred following a procedure, you may be able to make a claim for compensation. If you have received surgery on the wrong area or you have received a prescription that you have previously been allergic to, you may also be able to win a cash sum should there be evidence of negligence.
