BBC’s Jon Sopel hurt in scooter accident

By David Brown on October 22, 2010

BBC newsreader Jon Sopel has been injured after an accident in Central London.

Sopel, 51, was on his way to the BBC studios when the accident happened.

He was taken to hospital in an ambulance, but the BBC would not divulge the nature of his injuries, saying only: “Jon was involved in a scooter accident this morning and will be off air while he recovers.”

“We wish him well and look forward to him coming back.”

Unconfirmed reports in the Daily Mail have speculated that the married political journalist may have sustained a broken hip.

He was riding a scooter to Television Centre to present coverage of the Government spending review when the accident occurred.
