The danger of parking lots in big shopping malls

While the parking lots of big shopping malls are without doubt convenient and can make shopping a whole lot easier, they can also be extremely dangerous places to be. In addition to the risk of sustaining injuries by slipping, tripping and falling, shoppers also face the danger of being hurt by moving vehicles.

Big shopping malls’ parking lot trips and slips

By far the most common injuries in big shopping malls’ parking lots are injuries by slips, trips and falls. Common causes of slip, trip and fall injuries include:

    • Poor weather conditions, such as snow, ice and heavy rain
    • Debris, grease, oil or other slippery substances
    • Uneven or cracked surfaces and potholes
    • Cracked or otherwise damaged wheel stops
    • Dislocated or misaligned wheel stops
    • Damaged or uneven steps in stairwells
    • Non-existent or damaged handrails in stairwells

Poor lighting can also be the cause of injuries by trips and falls.

    Incidents involving vehicles

Injuries by accidents involving vehicles are also fairly common in the parking lots of big shopping malls. Here, common causes include:

    • Inattentive, careless or even reckless drivers and pedestrians
    • Confusing or inadequate signage
    • Limited visibility due to sharp bends in multi-storey parking structures

During dark periods of the day or year, poor lighting may also result in drivers not seeing pedestrians in time to prevent parking lot accidents.

    Preventing mishaps in parking lots

Those responsible for big shopping malls’ parking lots have a responsibility to assess and minimise potential risks by maintaining surfaces and other parts of parking structures in a safe condition and providing adequate, properly positioned signs and lighting.

Drivers and pedestrians equally have a duty of care to act in a manner not likely to cause personal injuries to others or themselves.

    When shopping trips go wrong

If you sustained an injury by tripping, slipping or falling or by being hit by a vehicle in a parking lot, you could be entitled to make a public liability claim if your parking lot accident occurred within the past three years and was caused by someone other than yourself.
