    The sun is shining and the holidays are on the horizon. This can only mean one thing: barbecue season is just around the corner. If you’re a fan of entertaining or you fancy yourself as king or queen of the grill, it’s a good idea to bear some simple safety considerations, such as whether it’s safe to reheat BBQ food, in mind.

    Should you reheat BBQ food?

    We’ve all been there. You’ve got friends and family coming round for a barbecue and you’ve bought enough food for a small village. It’s very easy to get carried away when you’re shopping and end up with far too much food. If you have got leftovers, you may be wondering whether it’s safe to keep hold of them. The good news is that you can reheat BBQ food without putting yourself at risk of food poisoning, provided you follow these guidelines:

    • Cover any leftovers and let them cool (don’t leave meat out in the sunshine)
    • Put your BBQ food in the fridge (this should be done within 2 hours)
    • Use any leftovers within 48 hours
    • Ensure reheated food is piping hot before you serve
    • Only reheat meat once

    Preventing barbecue accidents

    If you’re hosting a gathering in the garden, the last thing you want is people to be complaining about an upset stomach or an accident like a slip, trip or fall to put a dampener on the day. If you’re in charge and you want to avoid barbecue accidents, these tips should come in handy:

    • Place the BBQ far away from the group and make sure it’s on level ground
    • Always ensure you’re in a well-ventilated space
    • Supervise children and pets at all times
    • Make sure food is cooked through before serving: you can serve steaks and burgers pink, but ensure that sausages and chicken breasts are cooked fully
    • Clean your barbecue before use and store it in a safe place
