The NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK including identification and control of workplace hazards. Importantly, some of the modules cover the practical application of this knowledge. Anyone who wishes to progress either in a purely H&S role within their company or who would like to know more about the legislation relating to Health and Safety would gain a lot from this course and the flexible nature of the study involved would suit anyone. Modules can be studied in any order – the only ‘fixed’ part of the course is the examination date, as might be expected. Upon successfully completing the course, holders of the National General Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH. Not only that, but this qualification is accepted throughout the UK, as it meets the criteria of both the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and reaches NQF/QCF Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Training minimises accidents
Having a well-trained staff can certainly help to minimise accidents but sadly cannot ensure that untoward events never happen. Some workplaces have a naturally higher tendency to have serious accidents – the construction industry and agriculture are the two most dangerous, statistically – and so more care must be taken if that is where you work, but it is not acceptable to just shrug and accept the dangers – if everyone is vigilant, accidents will be reduced, but they do sometimes happen, nonetheless. If you have an accident at work which is the fault of someone else, then you have a good case for a compensation claim.
