Floor finishes: Combating slip, trip and fall injuries

Slips trips or falls tend to happen more on smooth surfaces such as vinyl, varnished wood and ceramic tiles. These floor finishes are used for both their aesthetic purpose and costs. Although cost is an important factor to take into account when furnishing a home or business premise, a slip or trip could increase costs exponentially due to a claim for compensation or working time lost through injury.

It is possible to buy floor finishes which can help reduce the chances of suffering a slip or trip. In this article, we’ll be having a look at some of the floor finishes you can install in order to reduce the chances of a slip or trip occurring.

    Types of floor finishes

Rubber mats, pressure-sensitive abrasive strip or abrasive-filled paint-on coating and metal or synthetic decking can enormously reduce the chances of a slip, trip or fall. A slip or trip occurs when footwear loses friction with the ground. The above materials, especially in the case of abrasive coatings, increase the amount of friction or grip that footwear has with the ground and therefore, decreases the risk of slipping or tripping. In addition to reducing the chances of a slip or trip, resilient or non-slippery surfaces can also help to reduce foot fatigue.
