    The correct running form to avoid injury


    Running is a hugely popular hobby. Whether you like to push yourself to the limits on the track or you enjoy a gentle jog in the park from time to time, it’s wise to try and perfect your technique. If you have the correct running form, you’ll reduce your risk of injury significantly.

    The correct running form: how to prevent running injuries

    There are lots of different factors that can elevate the risk of running accidents. One way of preventing running injuries is to adopt the correct running form. If you have a good technique, you’ll lower your risk of injury, and get more out of your training sessions. Here are some tips to help you improve your form and your performance:

    • When you’re running, don’t try to increase your stride length. This will cause you to reach forwards, which will increase strain on your muscles.
    • Your knee should be in line with your foot. If the foot is further forward, this can put you at risk of injury, especially if you run downhill a lot.
    • Use the ground to push up and stay on your toes.
    • Keep your hands and wrists relaxed, and your elbows at 90-degrees (or lower)
    • Relax your shoulders

    You can also reduce your risk of running injuries by:

    • Always ensuring you warm up and cool down thoroughly
    • Using the correct equipment: your shoes are particularly important
    • Conditioning your core
    • Resting and seeking advice from a doctor if you suspect you may have an injury

    Can I claim compensation for a running injury?

    Often, running accidents are inevitable. If you run every day, it’s very unlikely you’ll finish the year without an injury of some sort. Overuse injuries are common in runners, so try and make sure you take rest days and seek advice if you develop symptoms such as pain and swelling. In some cases, running injuries can be prevented. This usually boils down to the individual following advice and guidelines, and preparing and protecting their body properly. In some cases, however, other people may be to blame for an accident. If you’ve developed injuries as a result of poor coaching or using faulty equipment, for example, you may be able to claim compensation for a running accident. If you were running in a public place and you slipped due to a broken paving stone, for example, you may also have a case for personal injury compensation.
