Contributors to industrial blindness: Sharp objects

One of the many common causes of industrial blindness is sharp objects piercing the eye and causing irreparable damage to the cornea, iris, retina, optic nerve or other sensitive parts of the eye.

Causes of eye injuries and industrial blindness

Eye injuries involving sharp objects could be caused by accidents at work, at home or on the road.

A work accident involving an explosion, for example, could cause an injury to the eye by catapulting sharp fragments of glass, metal or wood into it. Jobs involving grinding equipment may also result in an eye injury at work if safety glasses or goggles are not worn and tiny, but sharp particles of metal become lodged in the eye.

    Knives, broken bottles and more

Slips or trips at work, in restaurants or in shops could cause blindness if the person tripping or slipping ends up falling onto a sharp objects, such as a knife, table edge, screwdriver, broken pieces of a bottle or glass, or even through a glass door or window.

    The implications of blindness

Suffering a blinding eye injury is not only intensely painful, it can also make it very difficult for the affected individual to live a normal life, return to work or drive.

The trauma of sustaining such a potentially life-changing injury could also cause anxiety and depression, even post-traumatic stress disorder. Stress and financial difficulties brought on by loss of earnings, medical expenses, travel and care costs, for example, could also have a serious effect not only on the injured person, but on the whole family.

    You should claim

If you have sustained industrial blindness because of a workplace accident, a slip, fall or trip or any other type of accident, for that matter, you may be entitled to make a personal injury claim.

While claiming will not restore your sight, it will help with your financial situation. Depending on what happened. how and why, it may also lead to an investigation that will ultimately help to prevent future work related accidents, including trips, falls or slips, for other workers.
