We all know that using the road carries risks of experiencing a road traffic accident. Whether you are using a car, a lorry, a van or a bicycle – whatever your vehicle of choice – it is important that you stay vigilant when out and about to ensure your own safety and the safety of others using the road around you, especially so in areas known as traffic accident hotspots.
Road traffic accidents in Cornwall
Cornwall is no exception to the rule that there are accident hotspots in all towns and cities. Typically a relaxing area of the UK, boasting breath-taking scenery, Cornwall is a favourite among holidaymakers, both from UK and abroad.
This itself increases the risk of road traffic accidents as unfamiliar drivers take to the road, unaware of black spots, and increase the risk of road-related accidents.
The RAC Foundation reported in May 2014 that Cornwall also has one of the worst safety records for teenage drivers in the country:
‘A shocking 15.5 per cent of all road casualties in the county were injured or killed in collisions involving a car driver aged 17-19 – despite the fact the age group only makes up 1.5 per cent of all licensed drivers.
‘The numbers are well above the average for the UK, where 11.9 per cent of all accidents involve a teenage driver.’
Problem roads in Cornwall
In addition to these general road issues, there are a number of roads in Cornwall that are viewed as road accident hotspots.
The A30, which runs across Cornwall from London to Land’s End, is believed to be one of the most dangerous in the area, with a total of 25 fatalities in a five-year period, up to 2011.
The A3058, which crosses the A30, is believed to be one of the worst roads in Cornwall, with several fatal accidents occurring on this stretch of road each year.
Despite the widening of the road, to cope with the flow of traffic, the amount of road accidents occurring in Trewoon remains problematic.
