    The 5 ‘most dangerous’ everyday foods to eat

    Whether it’s something wolfed down quickly for little more than sustenance or a lavish feast for which hours are spent both preparing and enjoying the fruits of your labours, food is a major everyday presence in all of our lives.

    From undercooked meats and poisonous mushrooms to scalding hot pots and mouthfuls going down the wrong way, the preparation and consumption of food is littered with potential hazards to health.

    Aside from cartoon-like slips, trips and falls on banana skins, there are a number of hidden dangers in foods that you might otherwise think to be perfectly safe.

    Here is a run down five of the most common, everyday foods that can actually pose significant threats to your personal health and safety.

    1. Beans: Their versatility and considerable health benefits make beans a popular ingredient in salads, soups and rice dishes. The presence of fibre, protein, carbohydrates and iron mean they are naturally, as the old rhyme goes, good for your heart. However, beans also contain lectin, a plant protein that can act as an insecticide, leading to numerous personal illnesses.
    2. Almonds: Usually found in the nut aisle, almonds are technically seeds. They are also incredibly dangerous to eat when properly raw. That’s because bitter raw almonds contain cyanide which is activated whenever a raw almond is bitten, chewed or crushed. Understandably, no almonds described in supermarkets as ‘raw’ actually are.
    3. Fruit stones: From apples and cherries, peaches and plums to apricots and nectarines, a number of fruits contain pips and stones that pose similar cyanide dangers to the almond.
    4. Rhubarb: Don’t worry, the red stalks can still be used in everyone’s favourite crumble dish, it’s the green leaves that need to be avoided, thanks to the presence of oxalic acid which can cause painful stomach illnesses.
    5. Potatoes: Like rhubarb, potato stems and leaves have the potential to cause health problems because they contain solanine. Any spoiled potatoes should be thrown out.

    No doubt the presence of leafy greens on this list will have youngsters up and down the country rejoicing. However, food-related illnesses are far from a laughing matter.
