Ayrshire male agency worker severely injured at work
It doesn’t matter whether you are in full-time employment, in part time employment, or employed as a temporary worker employed through an agency. All workers, regardless of their status, are entitled to the same rights and benefits as far as health and safety in the workplace is concerned. Take for example the case of a 28 year old, male agency worker who was recently injured at a company in Ayrshire, while he was working on the problem with a conveyor belt.
Worker’s arm severed at the shoulder
The worker had been employed to separate waste paper and plastic that was being transported on a conveyor belt. He was alerted to a problem, which he then saw was being caused by a container that had become stuck to a fixing on the conveyor belt. He opened an unsecured, free fitting, hinged guard to gain access to the blockage. As he reached across to grab the container his left hand touched and became ensnared with the belt. The man suffered a horrific injury whereby he lost his left arm, which was severed at the shoulder.
The findings of the HSE accident investigation team
In a subsequent investigation carried out by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) it was found that the company:
- Failed to provide a lockable guard
- Failed to ensure that sufficient supervision was in place
- Failed to provide an automatic system to clear blockages safely
- Neglected to ensure that their risk assessments for working with the conveyor belt identified clearing blockages as being a potential risk
The company responsible for the accident and injury were ordered to pay damages of £118,000.
